AUSTIN, Texas — Dogs at Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) need your help.
The shelter said Saturday evening that its Parvo Puppy ICU had flooded with sewage water. The care team immediately went to work to move puppies currently receiving treatment for parvovirus into alternate wards within the ICU, but the shelter needed to immediately move out the puppies who had already completed the treatment and tested negative for parvo.
APA! said it needed people to pick up those parvo-negative puppies before 6 p.m. Saturday. At around 9:15 p.m., APA! provided an update, saying that 17 puppies were placed with adopters and fosters "thanks to the rapid response from the Austin community."
On Sunday, APA! said that thanks to the generous community, 15 more parvovirus survivor puppies went to homes with fosters and adopters, and a total of 23 puppies went to foster and adopter homes.
"The staff in the Parvo Puppy ICU spent the day cleaning up after yesterday's sewage flooding and they resumed treatment of the puppies who continue to test positive for parvovirus," a spokesperson said. "They are grateful to everyone who stopped by yesterday and today to pick up a puppy for short-term fostering and those who adopted puppies!"
APA! added that one of the survivor puppies who went home with a family was a 3-month-old Great Pyrenees mix named Fusilli, who was Sunday's Austin FC Honorary Mascot of the Match.
Austin Pets Alive! is a nonprofit animal shelter, with a mission to end euthanasia of companion animals. Earlier this year they celebrated the 100,000th rescue ... a parvo survivor.
