Severe thunderstorms lead to flooding, road closures

A flash flood watch was lifted around 1 p.m. Sunday.

AUSTIN, Texas — A fresh round of thunderstorms across Central Texas on Sunday has led to flooding and road closures throughout the Austin area.

The storms also prompted the cancellation of the Cap10K race on Sunday morning.

Dozens of roads and low-water crossings were closed, according to atxfloods.com.

Northbound I-35 was closed just south of U.S. 183 thanks to high water on the road. It has since reopened.

Vehicles on I-35 were reportedly hydroplaning around mile markers 271 and 277, according to Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody.

The area was under a flash flood warning until just after noon. A flash flood watch was lifted around 1 p.m.

The National Weather Service has advised people to remain indoors.

By noon the heaviest rain had mostly moved east of the Austin area.

Two inches of rain had collected at Lady Bird Lake.

The Fire Department station on E. Rundberg Lane received more than 2.4 inches of rain since midnight, while nearly an inch of rain was reported in Pflugerville over a 15-minute stretch. Cedar Creek saw more than 3.5 inches of rain since midnight.

Widespread power outages have affected the Austin area for a second day in a row.

The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport said water had caused authorities to move the ride share pick-up area temporarily to the lower level at the Barbara Jordan Terminal.

Saturday brought around 4 inches of rain to the region, increasing the risk of flooding. Hail and damaging winds also ripped through the area.

Quarter-sized hail was reported in San Antonio on Sunday.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for several counties on Sunday morning as the storm headed north, including Bexar, Blanco, Comal and Guadalupe counties.
