Former Longhorn, Rod Wright joins coaching staff at UT-San Antonio

"We think he’s one of the best young coaches in the country and he will be a great addition to our staff,” said Frank Wilson, UTSA head coach.

SAN ANTONIO — Former All-American Texas Longhorns defensive lineman, Rod Wright continues his ascension as a college football coach.

Wright is returning to Central Texas to coaching the defensive lineman at UT-San Antonio.

“He was an outstanding collegiate player and he has done an exceptional job mentoring defensive linemen everywhere he’s coached," said Frank Wilson, UTSA head football coach.

"We think he’s one of the best young coaches in the country and he will be a great addition to our staff,” said Wilson

Wright joined Wilson's staff after spending the 2018 season as the defensive line coach for the East Carolina University Pirates.

Prior to his time at ECU, Wright spent four seasons coaching at FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) Sam Houston State University.

During Wright's time in Huntsville, Texas, the Bearkats program won 46 games and reached the national semifinals twice.

As a defensive lineman for Mack Brown at Texas between 2002 and 2005, Wright received All-America and Big 12 honors. He also played in two Rose Bowls, including the BCS National Championship game after the 2005 season.

One of Wright's memorable plays as a Longhorn occurred during the 2005 Red River Rivalry game vs Oklahoma. Defensive end, Brian Robison sacked OU quarterback, Rhett Bomar, forcing a fumble. Wright scooped up the fumble and rumbled 50+ yards for a touchdown.
