AUSTIN — Austin ISD voted Monday to rename Fulmore Middle School because of its namesake's ties to the Confederacy.
Fulmore will be the third school in the district to be renamed.
The campus was named after Zachary Taylor Fulmore, a Travis County judge and trustee for the Texas School for the Blind -- and a member of the Confederate Army.
Board members voted to rename the school after Sarah Lively. Lively taught at the school for 25 years, then volunteered daily for another 27, according to the Statesman.
In February, board members agreed to rename all facilities named after Confederate leaders or members.
In November, the board voted to rename the John T. Allan Facility. It will be renamed in honor of Anita Ferrales Coy, who was principal at Allan and a district administrator. The district estimates that renaming process will cost between $50,000 and $100,000.
The board renamed Robert E. Lee Elementary in 2016. It was renamed Russell Lee Elementary, after the Depression-era photographer.
Austin ISD plans to have the new names in place by 2019.
