City of Hutto addresses notifications after boil water notice

Both citizens and businesses made do Monday as the city of Hutto remained under a boil water notice due to recent flooding.

HUTTO, Texas — UPDATE: Residents in the City of Hutto no longer have to boil water following lab test results as of Sept. 25.

ORIGINAL STORY: As the city of Hutto remained under a boil water notice, residents found ways around the nuisance Monday -- some saying the City waited too long to let them know.

The City discovered the problem after flooding on Saturday. Residents were notified about the problem through social media on Sunday.

"I never heard from the City," said Ginger Dean, a Hutto resident. "I've heard people got emails. I'm still waiting to get mine."

A spokesperson for the City of Hutto said they weren't able to send out any notifications through email or robocalls on Sunday because their third-party service provider was closed. So, instead, they posted information on social media.

It turns out, getting a meal in Hutto also gets tricky when the City puts a hold on drinking water.

“I was going to, you know, 'Hey, let's get some Sonic,' but I just found out,” said Brayan Trejo, another resident. “I don't know, I’ve been waiting here for a while. I've been pressing all of the buttons and none of them would work.”

That's because Sonic is closed for the day and there's a sign to prove it. Starbucks is also limiting its business by saying it's only selling packaged food and drinks. At gas stations, customers are met with another sign -- they’re not serving sodas or coffee. There's also no drinking out of school water fountains. All of the fountains at Hutto High School have been covered in plastic bags and, instead, the school is passing out water bottles to ensure student safety.

But Snuffy's Bar and Grill only had to make minor changes.

"They have shut other businesses down because they're more restaurant-based than us," said Danny Nichols, a bartender. "With us, since we don't have plates and metal utensils, we don't have to wash so many dishes."

Though the City restored pressure to the water system Sunday afternoon and water restrictions were lifted, the boil water alert will remain until the earliest lab results are analyzed, which officials said would be in on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
