Hutto road rage shooting began when man passed another driver, authorities say

Hutto police said shots were fired after a man allegedly passed up another vehicle.

HUTTO, Texas — Police have made an arrest after a road rage incident resulted in a shooting in Hutto on Saturday.

Pedro Acosta, 31, of Hutto has been charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon.

According to the Hutto Police Department's Facebook page, the shooting happened around 7 a.m. Officers were called to the scene, where they found Acosta standing by a vehicle with back end damage, an affidavit said. When officers asked him what happened, he said it began when he passed another vehicle using the middle turn lane. The other driver -- a 54-year-old man -- honked at Acosta, and he told officers he started making hand gestures at the other driver.

Acosta said he pulled into the entry way of the Home Depot located off of Ed Schmidt Blvd. to make a phone call. Acosta told officers the other driver followed him there, and they got in a confrontation. He said that as the other driver started to pull away, Acosta accelerated his vehicle in front of the other driver's car.

That's when the two vehicles crashed, Acosta said.

Shortly after that, the other driver told officers that Acosta fired gunshots at his vehicle. Police believe Acosta fired about nine rounds during the incident.

One of those rounds hit the other driver just above his right ankle, causing a large amount of blood loss, officers said.

Police said both people were detained, and no other people were involved.

Hutto police are investigating.
