AUSTIN -- A man was arrested after he allegedly attacked his 71-year-old grandmother, who presumably threw his food in the trash.

According to an arrest affidavit, the suspect, identified as Joe Monreal, 22, became agitated and started screaming at his grandmother after he noticed his food was gone.

When his grandmother tried to leave the residence, Monreal grabbed his grandmother's shoulders and punched her knees and hands, the affidavit reports.

Monreal's uncle said he witnessed the attack. The uncle said when his 71-year-old mother attempted to call the police for help, Monreal snatched her phone.

The uncle said he tried to intervene and stop his nephew; however, he said his nephew attacked him in the same manner, and he hit his head on a wall. Moments later, the uncle stated he called the police for help.

When police arrived at the scene, they said they confiscated a steel pipe with burnt residue and approximately .023 ounces of marijuana from Monreal.

Monreal was arrested for injury to an elderly individual, assault with an injury to a family member, interference with a 911 call, possession of marijuana and violation of a protective order, according to the affidavit.

He's currently in the Travis County Jail on a $71,000 bond.
