Reports of man lurking in Cedar Park backyards spark safety concerns

CEDAR PARK — Several people have reported strange activity going on in Cedar Park -- enough to make at least three homeowners call police and buy more security cameras.

One Cedar Park woman contacted KVUE because she’s concerned for her three daughters’ safety. They were all home alone one night while her husband was out last month when they heard male voices outside their first-floor window.

Then, as the voices got louder, Kari Armstrong said the person began throwing pebbles at the window.

They all ran upstairs and called Cedar Park Police to wait for police to search their property. Once officers arrived, they weren’t able to find anything suspicious.

Just days before that incident, another daughter spotted a man standing on the sidewalk outside their house, staring at the home for several minutes, Armstrong said. Armstrong claims he was looking in the windows, and “had green rope tied in a loop in his hand and he was just walking back and forth.”

A mother living in a nearby subdivision told KVUE she reported similar activity to police.

In May, Wendy Coffman in the High Meadows neighborhood said she saw a man standing across the street staring into house.

She also spotted him standing at her fence to the backyard and physically standing in her front yard.

Then, on Saturday, Coffman said that man tried to get into house, kicking the front door. There were kick marks around the door knob.

Coffman said her dog barked, and he ran off. She called Cedar Park police, but the man was gone.

“I’m scared that he knows there are mostly females in the house,” said Coffman.

Less than four miles away on a road called Forest Trail, there was another report of suspicious activity.

A homeowner who asked not to be identified said her young sons were playing in the backyard when one of them came screaming in saying a strange man had tried to grab him around his neck.

Her older son also reported seeing that same man in the backyard. She called police immediately, but by the time officers arrived, they couldn't find anything suspicious.

If officers do find someone, Assistant Chief Mike Harmon with the Cedar Park Police Department said they will “run their driver's license, make sure they don't have any outstanding warrants, find out where they live and why they're in the area."

Harmon said they're constantly looking for any patterns in these kind of calls, but so far they haven't identified any.

If police do find patterns, they'll increase patrols and they'll send out alerts on social media, officials said.

"We use Twitter, Facebook, and Nextdoor” said Harmon.

In the meantime, Armstrong isn't taking any chances. She said in addition to owning guns, they have added multiple security cameras and flood lights.

"I want to be able to see every angle, everything,” said Armstrong.
