Forecast: Hottest day of the year so far followed by possible severe storms late Thursday

Here are the latest updates from the KVUE Weather Team.

AUSTIN, Texas — We're gearing up for what could be our hottest day of the year so far on Wednesday with highs in the lower 90s and "feels like" temperatures in the triple digits.

The morning hours start muggy and cloudy once again with patchy fog possible. Partly sunny and hot conditions are expected for the afternoon as heat index values climb up to 103 degrees in Austin. Some areas in the far eastern Coastal Plains could feel as hot as 108! Make sure to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks if spending extended time outdoors.

Air quality will be "moderate" to "unhealthy for some sensitive groups" because of particulate matter (most likely smoke from seasonal burning in Mexico). There is a 10% chance for an isolated strong storm which could contain large hail for the northern edge of our viewing area.

Relief from the heat and humidity is on the way in the form of a cold front Thursday evening. While the heat relief is good news, the front will unfortunately come along with a severe weather risk Thursday afternoon into the early nighttime hours. Scattered storms, some of which could contain very large hail and damaging wind, will be possible during this timeframe.

Behind the front, temperatures drop into the upper 70s to lower 80s Friday through the weekend. Our rain chances will be isolated Saturday, but scattered storms return to the forecast Sunday and Monday.
