How to help your kids keep their school knowledge over summer break

How to help kids retain their knowledge over the summer.

AUSTIN — During the hot summer months, making sure a child retains all of the knowledge they learned during school can be a big challenge for parents.

According to a report from RAND Corporation, a nonprofit global policy think tank, American students lose up to one month per year in reading and math retention.

Colleen Lynch, Head of Lower School at St. Gabriel's Catholic School, offered some things kids can do this June and July to prevent what's referred to as the dreaded “Summer Slide”.

They're listed below:

  • Talk to your child's teacher about what they should work on
  • Practice math at the grocery store and at restaurants
  • Read every day – it doesn’t matter what it is!

Outside the home, kids can:

  • Attend camps that emphasize STEAM, financial literacy, creativity, socialization are important, especially as they get closer to the fall semester
  • Get outside and explore a national park, museum, or historic site
  • Go to a cultural festival
