Police identify South Austin fatal shooting victim

A man was arrested in Georgetown on a murder warrant in relation to a South Austin shooting that occurred overnight Saturday.

GEORGETOWN — Police have arrested a man on a murder warrant connected to a shooting that occurred in South Austin early Saturday morning, according to a spokesperson with the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force.

According to an arrest affidavit, police received several calls on May 19 around 2:30 a.m. regarding a shooting in the parking lot of Bender Bar and Grill located at 321 West Ben White Boulevard. According to police, callers advised that the suspect had shot someone in the face.

The victim -- identified as 47-year-old Glenn Howell -- was pronounced dead at the scene by Austin-Travis County EMS at 2:32 a.m., police said. Medical officials performed an autopsy and determined the cause of death to be from a gunshot wound to the head, according to police.

A witness allegedly told police he saw the suspect, later identified as Antoine Kirkwood, 35, shoot the victim after a physical disturbance and left the scene in a white Kia Soul.

According to the Austin Police Department, during the argument Kirkwood accidentally dropped his gun causing the magazine to fall out. Kirkwood then allegedly went to his vehicle, grabbed a second magazine and returned to where the victim was and shot him, APD confirmed.

The witness was able to take a picture of Kirkwood and the vehicle which helped officers identify him, police said.

The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, with assistance from the Central Texas Regional SWAT team, detained Kirkwood in the 1600 block of Northwest Boulevard in Georgetown without incident, according to police.

Kirkwood has been charged with murder and his bond is set at $100,000. According to online records, he is in police custody as of Monday afternoon.
