A pedestrian was killed in a traffic collision in northeast Austin Monday, police said.

AUSTIN — AUSTIN -- Authorities shut down the northbound lanes of Interstate Highway 35 near U.S. 290 after a pedestrian was reportedly struck and killed by an 18-wheeler while trying to cross the highway Monday morning.

Austin police said the collision occurred around 4:22 a.m. on the 5800 block of North I-35 northbound. According to preliminary investigation, a 2011 Peterbuilt 18-wheeler was traveling northbound in the right lane when it struck the woman. It appeared she was crossing the highway from west to east and was struck by the front left portion of the vehicle. She was pronounced dead on scene.

Police said the driver of the 18-wheeler stayed on scene and is not expected to face any charges.

At 6:15 a.m., Austin police diverted traffic onto Frontage Road at the 5800 block due to the crash; drivers were asked to avoid the area. At 7:26 a.m., police said all lanes had been reopened.
