Fishing tournament held in Jonestown to raise money for fallen hero

A fishing tournament in Jonestown turned itself into a last minute fundraiser for fallen Round Rock Police Officer Charles Whites. All proceeds from the fundraiser and donations will support his family.

Jonestown — What was supposed to be just a fishing competition at Lake Travis turned into a last minute fundraiser for a fallen hero.

On Saturday, the Blue Line Bass Club's fishing tournament at Jones Brothers Park in Jonestown changed into a fundraiser for Round Rock Police Officer Charles Whites.

Whites died Friday from injuries he sustained after a driver ran into him while he was directing traffic on I-35 in February.

All of the money raised from the fundraiser will support Whites's surviving wife, Connie.

Bobby Townes is an Austin police officer and organizer of the event. Townes spoke with KVUE about the fundraiser and what it means to give back to the Whites family.

"I know she's been through a hard time this last month and a half, being in the hospital for the last month and a half. I know she has accrued a lot of bills. We just wanted to give to her and say 'hey, don't worry about what's going on with the bills, here's a little something to help out with it,'" said Townes.

The fundraiser also had a silent auction that included an autographed Ted Nugent guitar and BBQ plates. Donations can submitted at bluelinebassclub.com.
