WATCH: Austinite Baker Mayfield finds out he's No. 1 pick for Cleveland Browns

It's official! Former Lake Travis quarterback Baker Mayfield has been selected with the 1st overall pick by the Cleveland Browns.

AUSTIN — The Cleveland Browns have found a new signal caller, and his name is familiar to those in Central Texas. The Browns selected former Lake Travis and Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield with the first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Here is the moment Mayfield got the call from the Browns:

Mayfield received a ton of support on social media from OU head coach Lincoln Riley, the Oklahoma Sooners program, the Cleveland Browns, Lake Travis High School and others as he received the call.

The walk-on Sooner even sported a hoodie with the phrase "Walk On." on the front as his draft watch party.

How did the Browns fans react to Mayfield's selection? Well...

In the last 48 hours leading up to the draft, there was more discussion that former Lake Travis quarterback Baker Mayfield would go number one to the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland had two of the top four picks in the 2018 draft, and the consensus was that the number one pick will be used for a quarterback.

The team that had success with Brian Sipe and Bernie Kosar in the 80s has had terrible luck with quarterbacks since 1999. That was when they drafted Tim Couch with the number one pick in the draft, and they’ve had 28 starting quarterbacks in that time.

The list includes a Longhorn, an Aggie and a Bear: Colt McCoy, Johnny Manziel, Robert Griffin III, Jason Campbell, Tim Couch, Derek Anderson, Brandon Weeden, Brian Hoyer, Kelly Holcomb, Charlie Frye, Jeff Garcia, Trent Dilfer, Josh McCown, Seneca Wallace, Brady Quinn, Ty Detmer, Luke McCown, Jake Delhomme, Thaddeus Lewis, Austin Davis, Ken Dorsey, Spergon Wynn, Connor Shaw, Bruce Gradkowski, Doug Pederson, Kevin Hogan, DeShone Kizer and Cody Kessler.

Now, the Austin-native could become the 29th this season, should he win the starting job.

Mayfield got his chance at Lake Travis in the season-opening game against Westlake at DKR Texas Memorial Stadium in 2011.

He was the backup quarterback to Colin Lagasse when the season began, but Lagasse hurt his shoulder in that game.

Enter Mayfield, who led the Cavaliers to a win versus Westlake and went on to win the State Championship. Since then, he’s walked on at Texas Tech and beat out Davis Webb for the starting job. Webb is now a backup quarterback for the New York Giants.

After a season in Lubbock, he transferred to Oklahoma, where he walked on and beat out Trevor Knight for the starting job. Knight subsequently transferred to Texas A&M.

Now the Heisman winner is a hot commodity in the NFL.

Former University of Southern California quarterback Sam Darnold and former Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen have been considered the top two quarterbacks in the draft, with experts predicting one of the two would be the pick for the Browns.

But more and more experts are looking past the physical qualities and looking at results.

Baker Mayfield was 25-2 at Lake Travis, and he was 34-6 at Oklahoma.

The Cleveland Browns were 0-16 last year and want a winner.

KVUE's Shawn Clynch emceed a Heisman trophy ceremony for Mayfield at the Hill Country Galleria on Sunday April 22.
