Windy conditions affect Special Olympics Cycling Event at COTA

95 Special Olympians braved the chilly weather and extra windy day for it's various cycling events.

AUSTIN — Dozens of special athletes battled windy conditions at the Circuit of the Americas in Southeast Austin on Saturday to try to qualify for next month's state cycling competition.

65-year-old Billy McLemore said he trained everyday and cycling has made him stronger. Although on this day, he stayed in the van because "it's too cold!"

Saturday was so windy, organizers had to take down a lot of its signs because they couldn't stand up to the winds.

"We're down to the bare essentials. We pulled all of the signs that we felt were not vital to the competition. We don't need anything blowing around hitting somebody, " said Jason Miller, the Special Olympics Program Director,

Cyclists 12 years or older rode as a means qualify for the statewide Summer Games, which will take place May 26 at UT-Arlington.
