Authorities identify victims in fatal head-on collision on U.S. 290

Officials said two people were pronounced dead on scene after a collision on US 290 near Cedar Valley.

TRAVIS COUNTY -- Authorities have identified the man and woman who were killed in a head-on collision along U.S. 290 Wednesday.

A Nissan Rogue driven by Jory Mayer, 21, of Austin was traveling eastbound on U.S. 290 in the left lane as a Ford Escape driven by Carol Ann Larue, 58, of Dripping Springs was traveling in the westbound lane, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. DPS said "for unknown reasons," Mayer drifted completely into the center turn lane before getting into the lane of the Ford Escape at around 4:24 p.m. Both drivers died on the scene.

There were no other passengers in the vehicles.

The area of the 11900 block of US 290 near Cedar Valley and Nutty Brown Road was limited to one lane for several hours. All lanes on U.S. 290 near the scene of the double fatal were back open as of 9:15 p.m., according to the Travis County Sheriff's Office.
