“It could’ve been me”: Community meets for town hall following 3 Austin explosions

Attendees said love, not hate brought them there as they gathered for a town hall-style discussion regarding the three explosions in Austin.

Community leaders, including the mayor and the chief of the Austin Police Department, and residents met for a town hall discussion Thursday following three explosions in Austin that killed two people.

“This is an entire community grieving together,” Mayor Adler said as he spoke to the crowd.

The discussion included an update from the APD, including a question and answer session with Chief Brian Manley.

They also called out each of the victims’ names and followed with a moment of silence.

“The reason why we're here tonight is not because of hatred,” said one attendee. “What brought us here tonight is love.”

Some in the audience knew the victims and lived close to the explosions.

“We are mourning and grieving with them,” said Shauntay Walker.

Walker said, while prayers are appreciated, they “aren’t enough.” She hopes they can start the healing process and move forward with a plan.

“Just strategy on how are we going to look out for one another and protect our communities,” said Walker. “Yes, APD has their part, but we have our part as well.”
