In contention for his first victory in five years, Tiger Woods made a valiant run Sunday, sinking a birdie on the 17th hole from about 44 feet.

But his effort fell short as he failed to birdie the 18th to force a playoff. Paul Casey finished one shot ahead of Woods and Patrick Reed to win the Valspar Championship with a final-round 65. Woods finished with a one-under 70 to get to 9-under for the tournament.

Woods, the winner of 14 major championships, had his fourth back surgery 10 months ago. He entered the final round one shot back of leader Corey Conners.
