While Texas Democrats turned out in numbers that have not been seen in more than a decade for the primary election Tuesday, far more Republicans showed up at the polls across the state, according to National Public Radio.
By the early hours of Wednesday, Democratic votes totaled nearly 1 million and Republican votes totaled more than 1.4 million, according to NPR. Democratic votes doubled totals from 2014 and reached a level not seen in a midterm primary for the party since 2002.

Several races are headed for runoffs. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and his Democratic challenger, U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke clinched their parties' nominations Tuesday. For Texas governor, former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez and Houston investor Andrew White advanced Tuesday from a field of nine largely unknown Democratic primary candidates. The runoff election is May 22.
