Austin Chinatown Center celebrates the 'Year of the Dog'

Austinites gathered Sunday at the Chinatown Center to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Hundreds of people kicked off the Year of the Dog at Austin’s Chinatown Center.

The Chinese New Year celebration on Sunday featured performances from several groups, including the annual favorites Dragon and Lion dance teams.

There were also bungee trampolines and rock climbing for the kids.

KVUE’s Jenni Lee emceed the event.

One family said it was important they keep their kids in touch with their heritage.

“This is our third year coming and each year we get to see something new and different that we might not have appreciated before, and it's a really good way to keep our kids in touch with both sides of their heritage,” said event-goer Elizabeth Tsui.

The event ended with the dance teams going door to door, bringing in good fortunes to the shops in the area.
