East Austin bank robbed twice in less than a month

Austin police responded to a bank robbery Saturday morning.

A bank robbery in Central East Austin Saturday morning marked the 10th bank robbery of 2018.

The robbery happened at BBVA Compass on Cameron Road shortly after 9 a.m.

The robber walked into the bank, pulled out the gun, and demanded money, police said. The armed robber then ran out of the bank with some cash, but police did not say how much cash.

Officers arrived at the bank just three minutes after bank employees pressed the panic button, but the robber was gone by the time they arrived.

"In the perfect world, we wish there were cops everywhere. A lot more cops. But it's hard. It's hard to be everywhere," Sr. Patrol Ofc. Demitri Hobbs said.

There were customers inside the bank at the time of the robbery, but they weren't hurt.

Police didn't have much of a description of the robber because he was wearing a mask and a hoodie, Hobbs said.

There have been 10 bank robberies in the Austin area since the beginning of 2018.

Here's a look at the number of bank robberies in recent years, according to APD data:

  • 2017: 18
  • 2016: 15
  • 2015: 11
  • 2014: 8
  • 2013: 17

The bank where Saturday morning's robbery happened was also robbed on Feb. 8.
