History of guns on AISD campuses

Records show BB guns were the most common weapon found with students. Issues of students bringing guns on campus spanned elementary, middle and high schools.

Austin schools police on average have responded to a report of a gun on campus about once every other month over the past two years, documents show.

District records show no one was ever seriously injured by one of those weapons.

But in at least two instances, students shot BB guns at their classmates.

One of those cases happened in Dec. 2017 at Sunset Valley Elementary School and involved a fourth-grader. A letter to parents said one student shot another, but that it did not break the student's skin.

In another case, a fifth-grader shot a BB gun in April 2017 at Oak Hill Elementary, hitting several students. No one was seriously injured.

Documents show at least two arrests for students who had handguns in the past two years.

When a school employee learns that a student may have a gun, officials said that a school resource officer is called to investigate and confiscate any possible gun. It then becomes a law enforcement matter -- and police determine whether to file charges.
