Police have arrested a 21-year-old driver who pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and pointed it at an off-duty police officer, according to an affidavit obtained by KVUE.

On Feb. 19 at 1:17 p.m. on South 1st Street, an off-duty officer approached a red light at the West Stassney Lane intersection and was almost struck by a silver Lexus that had exited a Walgreens parking lot and was approaching the northbound lanes. Police said this left the Lexus' vehicle stationary and facing the off-duty officer's vehicle.

According to the affidavit, the officer and the suspect -- later identified by police as Michael Tello -- began to exchange words. Police said the suspect then raised a semi-automatic handgun and pointed it at the off-duty officer from eight feet away.

The officer said that by the diameter of the barrel, he could tell the gun was not a BB gun or pellet gun. This made the officer fear for his life, the affidavit said.

The suspect then backed up and drove around the officer’s car. The officer followed the suspect to get his license plate number and called 911.

Police said the Lexus was registered to Tello. According to online records, Tello was booked in the Travis County Jail Feb. 21 and has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bail is set at $50,000.
