Attorney, conservative writer pushes for consideration of Gun Violence Restraining Orders

An attorney and conservative writer is pushing for the consideration of Gun Violence Restraining Orders.

Images of mass shootings like the one in Parkland, Florida, are a part of our reality. In the days after these events, the topic of gun-control takes center stage.

But this time, Gun Violence Restraining Orders, or GVROs, is something David French hopes conservatives would consider.

French is an attorney and writer for the conservative publication "National Review."

The order would allow a spouse, parent, sibling, or person living with someone who is showing signs of dangerous behavior and has proof of it, to petition a court for an order.

The order would give law enforcement the right to temporarily take that individual's guns right away.

"You're not banning a gun and you're not enacting sweeping measures that are impacted the rights of law-abiding citizens who are not a threat. It's very targeted to people who engage in behavior that raises real alarms," French said.

French says the person who the order is against will have a chance to contest it. Washington, California, Connecticut and, most recently, Oregon have laws similar to GVROs.

Currently, Texas is one of a few states where, with a judge's permission, authorities can take guns away on the basis of dangerous behavior.

However, this would involve police, not those close to the person.

French believes the order may not stop mass shootings, but it's enough to deter them.

"Let's see the results, lets see what happens after one year, after two years. What kind of experiences have there been with mass shootings? Who have the guns been taken from and under what circumstances," French said.
