Governor Greg Abbott announced Tuesday that FEMA would be releasing more than a billion dollars in aid to help fund much-needed projects, which have been hit the hardest by Hurricane Harvey.

Governor Greg Abbott announced Tuesday that FEMA would be releasing more than a billion dollars in aid to help fund much-needed projects, which have been hit the hardest by Hurricane Harvey.

"The wait appears to have been worth it," Governor Abbott said.

The news came to the members of the Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce.

"You will get your money as soon as you get your application in and get it approved," Governor Abbott said.

There is now a new source of federal funding that'll help those affected by the hurricane, rebuild their lives.

"A new additional source of funding that is available beginning right now today. The new source is a little be more than one billion dollars in hazard mitigation funds," Governor Abbott said.

The funds are more than to rebuild. They're to be used to restore the future.

Governor Abbott told 3News it's the very definition of hazard mitigation funding.

"They've given us $5 million right now so all the local mayors and county judges can apply for that money for hazard mitigation that will allow this community to rebuild in ways that will better protect them from future hurricane and flood damage," Governor Abbott said.

The one billion dollars is what FEMA estimates Texans are eligible for, but it could be more once a final tally is made at the one year anniversary of the storm in August.

"We have basically four different pools of money that should be able to address almost all the needs for the entire region," Governor Abbott said. "There's a ton of money, tens of billions of dollars."
