Watch: Europe's most active volcano erupts

Mount Etna put on quite the show on Dec. 3.

A photographer captured stunning photos of Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, erupting on Thursday.

The volcano, which is located on the Italian island of Sicily, spewed fire and sent plumes of smoke high into the air as it erupted on Dec. 3.

Sicilian photographer Marco Restivo captured incredible footage of the eruption and posted it Thursday on YouTube.

Mount Etna is extremely active and has the longest record of continuous eruption, according to LiveScience

While beautiful, Thursday’s eruption was child’s play compared to Mount Etna's eruptions of the past. In 122 B.C., a massive eruption blocked the sun for days, according to Roman records, LiveScience reported.

A 2013 eruption caused the Catania airport to close nearby airspace for several hours, AP reported.
