An army veteran was in stable condition at an Oregon hospital Friday, a day after facing a gunman during a deadly shooting at a community college in Oregon, Mercy Medical Center officials said.

Chris Mintz, 30, was shot seven times, according to Shelly Stefanich, a spokeswoman for Mercy Medical Center.

His family members said the 30-year-old jumped into action to save the lives of people in his classroom, WFMY-TV reports.

According to family members, he told them he tried to block the door to keep the gunman from coming in, Fox 8 reports. He was shot at multiple times.

"He's going to have to learn to walk again," Ariana Earnhardt, his cousin, told Fox 8. "But he walked away with his life, and that's more than so many other people did."

Authorities say the male shooter — who they have refused to name publicly in an effort to avoid giving him further notoriety — was killed in a shootout with police around 10:30 a.m. PT on Thursday.Ten people were killed and seven injured in the shooting at Umpqua Community College. It was the fifth shooting on a U.S. college campus since August of this year.

Ore. shooting: 'I don't even want to know the names yet. I'm not ready'

On social media, the hashtag #ChrisMintz was trending as people share his story and offer support for his family and the other victims.

There has been a push from authorities and many of the victims' families not to use the alleged shooter’s name. One person tweeted,  "I haven't seen the shooter's name once, but I know the name Chris Mintz."

Others praised his service to his country and bravery in the face of death.

Friday, Mintz had a friend post an update on his condition to his Facebook page: “This is Chris’s friend, Chris asked me to thank everyone for their support, he is grateful and keeping our community and all victims in his thoughts.” Mintz's family set up a GoFundMe account to pay for his medical bills, and raised more than $500,000 in 14 hours.

The GoFundMe page says, "During the shooting both of his legs were broken and he is going to have to go through a ton of physical therapy. While Chris is not the type of person to ask for it, he is going to need all the help he can get while he recovers!"
